Cat in the Hat Cake and Cupcake Toppers

“Look at me! Look at me!
Look at me NOW! It is fun to have fun
But you have to know how.”
-Dr. Seuss

To make some fun edible art for any cake or cupcake, all you need is:

-gum paste
-cutting tools
-rolling pin
-clean surface
-powdered sugar
-paint brush
-lemon extract
-and food coloring (preferably gel)

For this semi-tutorial, I have made Cat in the Hat cake and cupcake toppers. I started off with plain, white Satin Ice gumpaste and rolled it out to about 1/4 inch. Using a picture of Cat in the Hat, I free handed the outline of the head with a  cutting tool.

For the cupcake toppers, I used cookie cutters to make the hat bases and molded the hats.

I let the figures dry overnight so they could be painted. By "painted" I mean with all edible mediums. To paint on gumpaste it is important to use a fluid that has a high alcohol content. The best is to use vodka; however, I choose to use Lemon extract which has a high alcohol content and tastes better if one chooses to consume the decoration.

It is important to be patient with this process. Allow each color to try to avoid smearing and running of colors.

And voila!

The cake toppers would go great on any cake! Check out a cake I made a few years ago:
